While Abbeyglen is completely in its own private grounds surrounded by trees and hills with spectacular views of the Twelve Bens Mountains as well as views of the sea, it is still only a 6 minute walk from the castle to the bustling village of Clifden, where you can enjoy fantastic shopping, lively little pubs and meet friendly locals.

The Old Front Door

The Abbeyglen Castle was built in 1832 by John d’Arcy of Clifden Castle. It was leased to the then parish priest as Glenowen House.

In 1854 it was bought by the Irish Church Mission Society for use as a Protestant orphanage where girls were trained for domestic service.

In 1953 it became a mixed orphanage housing seven boys and four girls. It was supported by donations from local patrons plus various investments. The Connemara Orphan Nurseries operated until 1955, when it closed due to financial difficulties. After its closure the building fell derelict and was home to cattle and sheep for some time!

The property was purchased by Mr. Padraig Joyce of Clifden and he and his wife operated the Glenowen House Hotel in the 1960s. The Hughes family took over in 1969 and have developed the Abbeyglen Castle into one of Connemara’s most prestigious hotels.

The Abbeyglen Castle Hotel is keenly aware of its duties and responsibilities to the environment, its employees and to the community. We are committed to the following practices and principles to enable us to meet and exceed expectations.

1. Running an efficient and successful hotel operation supporting the local economy by being a key employer in the area
2. Carrying out our business by the most environmentally and socially aware practices practicable 3. Constant monitoring and updating of practices and training of staff to deliver the benefits

Initiatives currently undertaken:

– Mindful of the cost of energy, raw materials and labour involved in production, the ordering of all items is carefully controlled to minimise waste. Bulk purchasing is also used where possible to minimise packaging.
– The use of lighting and heating is constantly monitored to ensure these resources are not wasted, whilst not compromising comfort standards.
– Energy efficient light bulbs are installed wherever possible.
– Hotel heating is minimised from Spring to Autumn
– Email communications are only printed when necessary
– Advertising and bookings are encouraged via the hotel website or email to reduce paperwork
– New equipment is chosen with energy efficiency in mind
– Soap dispensers are used in public toilets to reduce the waste from under utilised soap bars
– External lighting is controlled by light sensors to ensure energy usage is efficient


– All hotel waste paper and cardboard is separated from general waste for recycling
– Scrap paper is reused where possible for note taking
– Menu paper and other printed materials are reused where possible by printing on the reverse side – Stationery items are reused wherever possible
– Glass and bottles are recycled
– Guests are pro-actively offered the opportunity to assist in minimising energy consumptions by deciding on less frequent replacement of fresh linen and towelling

Support for local community:

– Charitable donations are made to local charities
– Promotional materials for local facilities and attractions are displayed and readily available to guests
– Corporate hospitality is conducted supporting local suppliers, facilities and attractions
– The hotel is carefully and continually maintained enhancing the overall appearance of the local areas
– Cash is injected into the local community in the form of business rates
